Jurors In Voyeurism Trial Visit Alleged Crime Scene
Thur 24th May 2012 , Yellow Advertiser

JURORS in the trial of a Basildon man accused of voyeurism have been taken to the scene of his alleged crime.

The jury was transported to the Basildon Sporting Village, where Glenn Ovenden, 38, of Newberry Side, is accused of spying on a naked woman in the swimming pool changing room.

Ovenden denies the charge.

Jurors were accompanied on the trip by three police officers, four court workers, a judge, two barristers and the defendant.

The judge also invited the Yellow Advertiser on the visit, saying he considered the trip ‘open court’.

The jurors were shown a row of three cubicles close to the changing room entrance.

Ovenden accepts that he was in the right-hand cubicle and his accuser was changing in the centre cubicle.

His accuser claimed that while naked, she looked down to kick her swimsuit out of the way and saw Ovenden's head sticking under the partition.

She claimed she could see his forehead, eyes and the bridge of his nose facing upwards.

At the scene, jurors attempted to recreate the incident.

A white-haired male juror positioned himself on the floor of the right hand cubicle while a female juror stood in the centre cubicle.

The male juror said he was unable to fit his head through the gap with the back of his head to the floor as described by Ovenden's accuser.

The male juror told the crowd: “I can't get my head in straight. I've got to turn my head to do it.”

The trial continues.
