Joram Bakumanya Convicted of Murdering Hero Chef Daniel Mitchell-Monroe as He Defended His Niece
Weds 14th Dec 2016, Yellow Advertiser

JORAM Bakumanya has been found guilty of murdering popular Basildon chef Daniel Mitchell-Monroe.

Bakumanya, 22, who was homeless before his arrest, was convicted this morning following a three-day trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Jurors had heard how Mr Mitchell-Monroe, 37, from Vange, was stabbed to death as he went to rescue his niece from Bakumanya, who was threatening to attack her in Market Pavement, Basildon town centre.

Bakumanya had asked Armani Lewis, 22, for her phone number, then become angry and started shouting threats after she refused to hand it over.

She called Mr Mitchell-Monroe ‘in fear’ and he arrived just as Bakumanya was about to slap her, prosecutor Andrew Jackson told jurors.

He punched Bakumanya, but the killer quickly overpowered him, said Mr Jackson, knocking him to the ground.

It was while Mr Mitchell-Monroe was still on the ground that Bakumanya administered the first stab wound.

He then stabbed him a further two times, damaging vital organs and severing his aorta.

Bakumanya represented himself at trial and claimed he had killed Mr Mitchell-Monroe in self-defence - a claim rejected by jurors after short deliberations, which began this morning.
