Two Sentenced For Manslaughter of Vilson Meshi in Pitsea
Fri 25th August 2017, Yellow Advertiser
TWO PEOPLE have been jailed for a combined 15 years for the killing of a man in Pitsea.
Keani Hobbs, 18, of Stagden Cross, was jailed for nine years for the manslaughter of Vilson Meshi in Pincey Mead last year. She was sentenced to 12 months concurrent for the theft of six flares.
Her co-defendant – a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons – was jailed for six years for the manslaughter and 12 months concurrent for theft.
Both will serve their sentences in a young offenders’ institute.
Mr Meshi, 31, was found dead in his burnt-out Audi A4 on February 27, 2016.
Hobbs and her co-defendant were convicted of throwing a stolen marine distress flare into Mr Meshi’s car while he slept in the back.
He had driven to Basildon from his home in Glossop, where he ran a Tesco car wash, late on the evening of February 26.
He was due to look after his children, who lived in Pincey Mead with his ex-partner, the following day, and had decided to sleep overnight in his car.
At trial, Hobbs and the boy each blamed each other for causing his death but denied knowing Mr Meshi was inside the vehicle.
But a jury yesterday convicted both defendants after almost three days of deliberations.
